Words Matter: Why Harmful Language About Disability Causes Real Harm

Some moments require more than reflection—they demand acknowledgment when something is unacceptable.

A Fargo business owner recently used a derogatory slur on social media to describe a public official. This word demeans and dehumanizes people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This act was deliberate, not a misunderstanding or joke. Harmful language still appears in public spaces and causes real harm.

We take this position based on values: dignity, accountability, and respect for people with disabilities.

For people with disabilities and their families, this language carries decades of stigma and exclusion. Words like this have justified bullying and denied opportunities, regardless of whether they are called commentary or humor.

Such language in public reinforces harmful stereotypes that the disability community works to overcome. It should be treated with the same zero tolerance as other demeaning slurs.

Calling out harmful language is not about political correctness, but about honesty regarding the effects of words used carelessly and publicly. Silence or soft language only reinforces harm.

Grounded in shared values of dignity, inclusion, and equity, The Arc of North Dakota works alongside our local chapters — including The Arc of Cass County, which serves individuals and families in the Fargo–Moorhead community — to advocate for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our work exists because moments like this still happen, and because silence in the face of harm only allows it to continue.

This is not about shaming or silencing. It's about taking responsibility and refusing to normalize harmful language.

We can and must hold people accountable for their language by speaking up when we hear harmful words. Demand respectful discussion from public figures and peers. Talk with those around you about the impact of language. Support organizations, such as The Arc of North Dakota and its local chapters, that work to advance disability inclusion. By acting together, we build a more inclusive community. Dignity is non-negotiable. Disagreement never justifies dehumanization.
