The Arc of Cass County held the Express Yourself! Art Studio on February 23 with two sessions-1 pm and 2 pm. Participants included individuals from West Fargo Transitions, Easter Seals, Connections, and Vocational Training Center. Leading the sessions were Mick Dunn, a retired art educator and professional artist, and Elsie Anderson, an NDSU student majoring in art education. They both have personal connections to the Arc and enjoy helping others express their creativity.

The process for this session was a wet-on-wet process that allowed the participants to enjoy the experience of painting with watercolor. Art provides significant therapeutic, social, and developmental benefits for people with disabilities. The involvement offers a non-verbal outlet for emotional expression, reducing stress and anxiety and improving fine motor skills and cognitive function. It fosters independence, self-esteem, and social interaction, empowering individuals to communicate their experiences and overall quality of life.

When asked by participants what they like about coming to art class, they said: “I like crafting stuff and being with other people”, another person said: “The class was fun!”. All participants and support staff enjoyed Mick’s humor and the overall excitement the class created.
